Compaq selects ATI 's Mobility™ Radeon® chip for its latest consumer and commercial notebook PCs

World 's highest performance, most feature-rich mobile graphics processor now shipping in Presario 1700

    Wednesday, August 1, 2001

MARKHAM, Ontario – ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT), a world leader in the supply of graphics, video and multimedia solutions, announced today that Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) will use ATI’s MobilityÔ RadeonÔ graphics processor for its new Evo Notebook N600c and Presario 1700 series notebook personal computers.

Both models are among the first announced notebooks in the world to include ATI’s Mobility Radeon chip.

The Mobility Radeon graphics processor, the industry’s highest performance, most feature-rich mobile graphics processor, brings all the features and performance of a desktop PC to the notebook space, including advanced video editing capability, smooth DVD playback, integrated TV-out, superior multi-monitor support, and the ability to run the latest high-power video games and an extensive array of the industry’s most graphics-intensive applications.

The new Compaq Evo N600c notebook PC features the Mobility Radeon graphics controller and other leading-edge components, including a Mobile IntelÒ PentiumÒ III-M processor for cutting-edge performance, magnesium alloy casing for strength and durability, and a fresh ergonomic design for ease of use. The N600c also features MultiPort, a small removable module on the back of the notebook display that enables wireless communication.

The new Compaq Presario 1700 series delivers high performance and mobility. It features the Mobility Radeon graphics controller as well as other leading-edge components, including a Mobile Intel Pentium III-M processor running at speeds up to 1.13 GHz (gigahertz), a IEEE1394 digital video input port, and hard drives up to 48 GB (gigabyte).

“The Mobility Radeon graphics processor delivers breathtaking performance and an extensive feature set, but also affords customers new levels of low power consumption – meaning longer battery life – and the smallest footprint through the highest level of integration,” said Reuven Soraya, Director of Marketing, Mobile Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc. “The Compaq Evo N600c provides consumers with exceptional functionality and portability, and the Presario 1700 series packs serious power into a thin-and-light configuration.”

“The Compaq Presario 1700 series and Evo Notebook N600c combine exceptional battery life and optimum size and weight with the latest technologies such as the Mobility Radeon mobile graphics processor to deliver the perfect balance of performance and mobility,” said Lorena Kubera, Director of WW Mobile Product Marketing, Compaq’s Access Business Group .

The Mobility Radeon’s technological advances include ATI's HYPER-Z™ memory bandwidth saving technology, which improves performance by boosting effective memory bandwidth by approximately 20 per cent; Pixel Tapestry™ architecture, a highly-optimized 32-bit color rendering engine that supports three-way multi-texturing and new 3D effects without compromising speed; Dual DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) for cost-effective, independent, multi-monitor support at maximum resolutions; and Video Immersion™, which provides industry-leading video playback enhanced by adaptive per-pixel de-interlacing, processing of full-frame rate, full-screen DVD, iDCT and integrated motion compensation. Mobility Radeon supports resolutions up to QXGA (Quad Extended Graphics Array) standard (2048 X 1536 pixels), an industry first, bringing a new level of display resolution and configuration flexibility to the mobile market.

In addition, Mobility Radeon further refines ATI's already unparalleled power management technology, producing the industry's lowest power consumption levels-as low as half a watt, including 8 MB of memory-in typical 2D, 3D and DVD modes.
