    Press Release - Archives 2000

ATI Technologies Inc. selected by Sony Electronics Inc. to supply graphics chips to Sony's new digital set-top box

Sony chooses ATI's RAGE™XL graphics and RAGE Theater™ video chips for its advanced digital set-top box

Design win further propels ATI into the consumer electronics field; set top boxes expected to outsell PCs by 2003

    February 14, 2000

Toronto, Ontario - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) announced today that Sony Electronics Inc. has selected ATI graphics and video components for its advanced interactive digital cable set-top box.

ATI expects the market for set top boxes to expand significantly over the next decade. By 2006, according to the Cahners In-Stat Group, there will be more households worldwide using set top boxes than personal computers. The selection of ATI components by Sony Electronics Inc. for their set top box further solidifies ATI's transition from the Personal Computer market to the much larger consumer electronics arena.

Sony Corporation, at the forefront of the consumer electronics revolution that is merging communications, multimedia, and entertainment, will use ATI's RAGE™ XL and RAGE Theater™ chips to provide features rarely seen in the cable industry, including photo-realistic 3D graphics, animation capabilities and crystal clear digital video.

"The Sony/ATI collaboration joins the premier brand in home electronics with the leading manufacturer of graphics and video components," said Vincent Win, vice president of OEM Sales, ATI. "ATI is proud that Sony has chosen ATI's graphics for its new set top box. This design win further positions ATI as a key player in the future development of consumer electronics devices, an important emerging market for us in the years ahead."

Digital Television technologies to provide Internet access and a plethora of rich media choices
According to Cahners In-Stat Group research, over 48 million US households will be subscribing to one form or another broadband delivery service by 2004. Broadband markets outside the US will add another 50 million households. By 2003, more set top boxes will be bought in the US than personal computers, for a potential market of approximately 10 million units. For content providers such as TV networks and movie studios, set top boxes will generate more than $40 billion annually from enhanced TV services by 2004.*

About the ATI RAGE XL and RAGE Theater graphics and video components
The RAGE XL provides bilinear and trilinear filtering, alpha blending and fogging, gouraud and specular lighting effects, Z-buffering, front and back-end scalers, antialiasing, horizontal and vertical filtering, and overlay features, allowing cable operators to implement advanced 3D applications and user interfaces when appropriate.

The RAGE Theater is the computer industry's first integrated chip with combined video decode and encode. It is a single chip that provides OEMs with the industry's highest quality and most cost-effective video-in and TV-out display solution for set top boxes and PC products. The RAGE Theater supports all popular operating systems, including Windows CE for the consumer appliance market.
